Week 4:

Week four was a much calmer week than last week. On Monday, students presented their research outlines to the public as part of our annual Open House. This gives the students a chance to gain confidence in discussing their research so that they are more prepared when it comes time for their final Presentations. Having the air conditioning not working in the Library put a new meaning to the phrase “Being on the hot seat” but the students did a phenomenal job sharing their project details with the community. The Open House was very well attended keeping the students busy all night – but not too busy to enjoy a treat from our Periodic Table of Cupcakes! Also during the week, the students put on a Talent Show up at camp. Some of the videos were posted to our Youtube Channel so definitely check that out! We have a very talented group of students and we can’t wait to hear them perform again at our Graduation Ceremony. In addition, the students had a chance to visit the Schoolhouse Museum located a very short walk from camp to participate in an Open House event they had going on there. Finally, we topped the week off with our annual trek up Mount Martin – a short boatride across the Ottawa River. We had marvelous weather for the hike this year and the students got to enjoy a refreshing dip in the Ottawa River and a picnic dinner once they got down to the bottom. Overall, we had another fantastic week! Hard to believe we have less than two weeks to go!
Week 3:

Week 3 at camp was a busy one to say the least! On Monday, Bryan White from the CNS put on an Ionising Radiation Workshop up at the camp for the students. On Tuesday, we had a special visitor for dinner – Mark Wilson, a DRSA alumnus, came back to camp to visit us and to talk to the students about his research and academic/career journey. It was really great having him back! Wednesday was our annual Science Olympics and Thursday we had our second evening lecture of the summer – this one by Peter Lang who came to talk to us about flight safety. Then, to top off our week, we headed to Ottawa Friday night for our annual sleepover at the Science and Technology Museum. We had an awesome time there and even got to go visit the Reserve Collections to see lots of the great artifacts and vehicles that are not currently on display in the museum. After leaving the museum, teh students particpated in a Photo Scavenger Hunt on Parliament Hill and then had some downtime to shop and eat in Downtown Ottawa. Check out our Facebook page for more great photos from our trip!
Week 2:

With week 2 in the bag, it’s time to post our weekly update. This past week, students had the opportunity to attend their first CNS organized lecture from Jeremy Whitlock. They also took part in the town’s annual Deep River 6×1 Relay. We entered two teams of students and the tutors also entered a team of their own. The competition was tough but we didn’t go home empty handed. Our tutors managed a sixth place finish and one of our student teams was also awarded medals as the youngest team to participate this year.
In addition, this past weekend we went on our first excursion of the summer visiting Algonquin Park to take in the scenery at Barron Canyon and cool off at High Falls. It was a beautiful day with very warm weather, and although the bugs tried to dampen our mood, we had a great time! Enjoy the pictures posted here on our website, but don’t forget, there are many more posted throughout the week on our Facebook Page.
Keep checking back!
Week 1:

On Sunday, June 30th, twenty-four students from across the country (and beyond) arrived at camp to begin their six weeks in Deep River. After unpacking and saying goodbye to their parents, the students participated in a few Ice Breakers and had a chance to get to know one another a little better. On Canada Day, the tutors spent the day with the students up at camp. After first convincing the students they would be writing a series of tests during the day, they “popped” into action with a surprise dance performance. For the rest of the day, the tutors participated in activities with the students including Quidditch, a Scavenger Hunt, a little bit of Volleyball and some fun in the water. After a night in town watching the Fireworks, the students headed back to the camp to rest up for their first day at work. The rest of the week comprised of training activities, and getting familiar with their projects and work sites. We are so happy to have another fantastic group of students and staff joining us this year and it is sure to be a wonderful summer! For more pictures, check out our Facebook Page.
