2012 DRSA Tutors

Introducing the DRSA Tutors for the 2012 program!

  Caroline Allen

Hello! My name is Caroline Allen, and I’m a University of Guelph student going into my third year of co-op Nanoscience.  In high school I couldn’t decide if I preferred chemistry or physics, so I chose a major that gives me the best of both worlds!  This is my first summer with the DRSA, and I look forward to tutoring my own students, as well as experiencing the DRSA program as a whole.  I love science, especially hands-on lab work, and enjoy linking classroom explanations to how a process actually looks and works.  I’m a part of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Club at Guelph, where I’ve gained lots of lab experience teaching and performing chemistry demos, as well as making many things explode, catch fire, and/or turn pretty colours.  My non-science interests include photography, sci-fi/fantasy books and shows, and music.

  Spencer Christiansen

I am from Toronto, Ontario and currently finished my second year at the University of Guelph in the Biophysics Co-op Program. I am interested in the health related aspects of physics so I find studying radiation highly interesting. I also enjoy being outdoors and playing just about any sport and listening to music in my spare time.

  Chris Cochrane

Chris is currently studying towards his Master’s of Applied Science in Materials Engineering at Queen’s University. He received a Bachelor’s in Science (Engineering) from Queen’s University, in the field of Engineering Physics with a Materials Science option. When he isn’t studying, Chris enjoys playing sports, like squash, soccer, rugby and ultimate frisbee. He is also been a member of the Kingston Pathways To Education program, tutoring high school students in the math and science.

  Courtney Engel

Hi, my name is Courtney and this will be my second year as a DRSA tutor/research assistant.  I have recently graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (minor in Geography) and will be attending Nipissing University in the fall to obtain my Bachelor of Education.  I hope to share my passion for science, research, and learning by becoming a high school biology and geography teacher.   Outside of school, my interests include travelling, camping, music, reading, and figure/synchronized skating.  I had an incredible experience with the DRSA last summer and I am very much looking forward to new adventures and another exciting summer!

  Anson Kung

My name is Anson Kung and I am a mechanical engineering student from the University of British Columbia. I specialize in mechatronics, which is a combination of mechanical and electrical. My hobbies include sports, photography, and participating in engineering competitions. I have a particular interest in robotics and my next project involves building a remote control drone that can perform a variety of tasks. If you have an interest in computers, programming, photography, or robotics, I’ll be happy to give you some tips.

  Mark Luloff

I am entering my third year as an engineering physicist at Queen’s University majoring in electrical engineering studies.  Even at an early age I had a deep interest in science and mathematics, often reproducing my homemade experiments and taking apart homemade appliances (with and without my parent’s permission).  In high-school I was introduced to physics and introductory calculus and quickly became interested in all topics related to nuclear physics, electromagnetism and all topics relating to electronics. I plan to graduate from Queen’s University and then enter graduate studies to achieve a doctorate in quantum mechanics and nuclear-physics related studies or in electrical engineering.  I am still undecided but I believe that I will be working in Research and Development for the Nuclear or Electronics Industry.

  Katie Spiler

Hey, I’m Katie. I just finished my second year at The University of Western Ontario in Mechanical Engineering. Aside from being a big science nerd, I also enjoy acting and writing, and I did both all through high school and during both of my years at university. I was also a DRSA student the summer after grade 10, and I honestly loved every minute of it. I learned a lot, I made great friends, and had such an amazing time that I just had to come back as a tutor! I hope that all of you really enjoy this experience as much as I did, because really, who of your friends can say that that worked near a nuclear reactor for the summer?.

  Matthew Stukel

My name is Matthew Stukel a third year student enrolled at Carleton University. I’m majoring in Applied Physics with a minor in Business. This will be my first time as a DRSA tutor. I love to ski and dream of one day heli-skiing down the Andes. I’ve travelled to Greece, Peru, the Grand Canyon and Nova Scotia. I enjoy watching football and playing almost any sport.

  Matteo Tessaro

Hi, I’m Matteo and I am an Honours Chemistry student at McMaster University. I am interested in music, sports and science and I love the outdoors. I plan to be a medical doctor (surgeon) or a professor of chemistry. I am easy-going and enthusiastic!

  Snow Wang

Hello, my name is Snow Wang. I’m going into my 2nd year of Engineering Science at the University of Toronto and am considering selecting either the Energy Systems option or the Finance option in my 3rd year. Upon graduating from EngSci, I hope to pursue graduate studies. I am from Deep River and attended the DRSA 2 years ago so I am very familiar with the area and the program. My summer at DRSA was amazing and I hope you all will experience the same. So if there’s anything I can do to make your summer better, or if you play basketball, piano or Starcraft, come and talk to me!
